When murderers kill their victims they increasingly do so with the intention of performing the role of a serial killer. The Zodiac Killer famously sent letters to the police taunting them and leaving codes for them to solve. Killers now, and maybe always, are cognisant of the fact that they are killers and tailor their MO and appearance to curate a certain brand. We see here that the idea of a sadistic, psychopathic, killer is such a captivating symbolic social character that the act of killing is no longer solely a genuine desire to kill, but also a desire to be a killer. In 2009, 15 year old Alyssa Bustamante killed her 9 year old neighbor Elizabeth Olten. Bustamante had a YouTube channel where she listed her hobbies as "cutting and killing people", she also posted a photograph of herself on social media with fake blood around her lips, pointing her index and middle finger in the shape of a gun to her head. After Bustamante killed Olten an entry was found in her diary from right after the murder which read: “I just fucking killed someone. I strangled them and slit their throat and stabbed them now they're dead. I don't know how to feel atm. It was ahmazing. As soon as you get over the ‘ohmygawd, I can't do this’ feeling, it's pretty enjoyable. I'm kinda nervous and shaky though right now. Kay, I gotta go to church now... lol.”
